We invite you to an evening of Bharatanatyam performance by Dr Narthaki Nataraj (www.narthakinataraj.com) on Saturday 17 February 2018.
Dr Narthaki Nataraj is an esteemed and acclaimed Bharatanatyam exponent from Chennai, India. She practiced Bharthanatyam for 14 years under Shri K.P. Kittappa Pillai, who was a direct descendant of the Tanjore Quartet brothers, considered fathers of Bharatanatyam. She specialised in the Tanjore style Nayaki Bhava tradition. As mark of her devotion to the cosmic dancer Lord Shiva, Dr Narthaki Nataraj runs an institution named Velliyambalam School of Dance.
She is a recipient of several awards, including the Kalaimamani Award from the Tamil Nadu Government (2007) and the SNA Puraskar Award from Shri Pranab Mukherji, the former President of India. She also received a Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Letters) from the Periyar Maniammai University.
Dr Narthaki Nataraj is a prominent role model for the Transgender Community as her perseverance and undying passion enabled her to overcome several social hurdles.
Dr Narthaki Nataraj is widely travelled. She has performed in the leading festivals in India, USA, UK and Europe and will be performing for the first time in Australia.
